For years, Chris and Natalie assumed they would eventually move out of their older neighbourhood in Edmonton.
The house they lived in no longer fit their family’s needs. The rooms felt disconnected, storage was limited, and the layout reflected a completely different era of living. But despite all of that, they couldn’t imagine leaving the community they loved. Their kids walked to school. Their favourite coffee shop was around the corner. The tree-lined streets and mature parks had become part of their family’s story.
What they really wanted wasn’t a different neighbourhood — it was a different experience of home.
When they came to DRAW Design Studios, they were weighing two difficult options: renovate extensively or start over with a custom infill home. Like many families in mature communities, they wrestled with the emotional challenge of replacing a home tied to years of memories.
Our role became more than simply designing a house. It became helping them clarify what mattered most.
Through the design process, we uncovered priorities that shaped every major decision moving forward. Natalie wanted natural light everywhere — especially during long Alberta winters. Chris wanted a home that felt clean and modern without feeling sterile or oversized. Both wanted intentional gathering spaces where teenagers, friends, and extended family could naturally come together.
The result was a thoughtfully designed modern infill that balanced contemporary architecture with warmth and livability. A dramatic open-to-above entry created an immediate sense of openness, while carefully placed windows preserved privacy without sacrificing daylight. The kitchen became the anchor of the home — designed equally for quiet mornings and large family celebrations.
One of the most meaningful design moments came when we incorporated wood details reclaimed from the original home into custom feature elements throughout the new build. It was a subtle but important way of carrying part of their family history forward into the next chapter.
Today, the home feels completely transformed — not just in appearance, but in how the family experiences daily life inside it.
What started as uncertainty about whether to stay or leave ultimately became a home that allowed them to remain rooted in the community they loved, while finally living in a space designed specifically for the way they wanted to live.
